NUS calls time on Loan chief
The National Union of Students (NUS) has called for the chief executive (pictured) of the Student Loans Company (SLC) to resign following this year’s loans blunder.
It comes after figures reveal that 146,000 students have still not received funds even though their applications have been approved.
Another 141,000 applications have been received but not approved. These figures, whilst now lower than those reported previously in Issue 31, still show the substandard service received by many students.
NUS President, Wes Streeting said: “This year, hundreds of thousands of students have been affected by late payments or lost documents and have endured a miserable start to term.”
“The Student Loans Company has given students a string of broken promises about when they should expect to receive some or all their loan payments. SLC bosses have failed to acknowledge the distress they have caused to students, and have sought to apportion blame anywhere other than their own doorstep.”
He added: “If they had been open about the extent of the problems, universities would have been able to plan contingency funding more effectively. It is time for Ralph Seymour-Jackson to take full responsibility for this shambles and resign immediately.”
Over 80,000 more applications were sent to the SLC for 2009/10 compared to last year.
