Valentine’s Day Rant

It’s that time of year, when love is apparently in the air and is the time for telling the person you love how you truly feel about them, but why? Why does somebody need one specific day in the calendar year to actually do this? If love is true, shouldn’t we be doing this at every occasion we get, which doesn’t by all means suggest that we should be doing all the predictable Valentine’s Day traditions, but merely just showing that someone that you love them.

Some people would argue that it gives men a reason to finally spoil the woman in their life or gives that shy girl an opportunity to pluck up the courage to tell that person who doesn’t quite notice her that she is crazy about him. Whatever the reason, I personally don’t see the point.

Straight after the Christmas season is over shops take down their Christmas decorations and have a full blown sale to get rid of all their stock and then in comes the Valentine’s Day gifts: lingerie and the so called ‘perfect’ outfit us as girls should wear for our man or to get noticed. It’s not just shops: restaurants promote Valentine’s Day dinners, hotels offer discounts on rooms, florists sell ridiculous amounts of roses and television shows and magazines offer advice on what to do and all of this is just done for one day…one!

Personally Valentine’s Day is now just like many other holidays – a money-making scheme for businesses and is completely unnecessary as a way of showing somebody you love them. I think hearing the words ‘I love you’ mean much more than being given a silly little teddy bear, after all there will be another person somewhere receiving exactly the same teddy bear, but not one other person will hear the words ‘I love you’ from your partner, except you!
