Film – Youth in Revolt

4/5]

Pitched to me as a typical American comedy, I wasn’t holding out much hope for this film. Starring Michael Cera of Juno fame and peppered with such fine actors as Steve Buscemi, I should have realised this wasn’t going to be some ‘hilarious’ slapstick affair. In short, this film was beautiful. Based on the books by CD Payne, it follows naturally shy Nick Twisp (Cera) as he does everything he can to get the girl, with the help of an alter-ego he builds.

Funnily enough there are bizarre little comic looking scenes which drop in every so often – which would have been shown as the devil on his shoulder if this was a comic. There were many genuine laugh-out-loud moments in the cinema, but the film was not begging for laughs.

The dialogue at first seems a little out of place given the young age of the central characters but adds so well to the crazy situation Twisp is finding him involved in for the girl he loves. Sadly, I found myself really empathising with the characters.
