In a tension-filled meeting room on the 4th May, around thirty students read the candidate’s manifestoes, heard them plead their case with individual minute long speeches, and then cast their vote in favour of their preferred candidate.

The positions up for grabs were Publication Editor, Deputy Editor, and Head of Design for both publications (Pugwash News and Pugwash Magazine), and all the head of section editor roles for both. Sub-editor roles (and any positions not filled this time around) will be elected in October when university resumes after the summer break.

A small number of the positions were not contested, with only one person standing for the position. One of these was Pugwash News Publication Editor, which was won by Ben Fishwick. Ben is the current Head of News, and will take over the role of Editor from the incumbent, Laura Patricia, at the beginning of June. The Head of Design was another position not contested, with Philip Geng being re-appointed.

The Magazine changed hands on both counts, with Steph Hall, who is in her final year now, being replaced by Emily Smith (formerly Essentials Editor), as Publication Editor, and Amyrose Dempsey (currently a design team member) taking over from Dan Spencer.

Prolific contributor to the paper, Dan ‘DW’ Whiteway, went up against current Comment & Opinion Co-Editor, Grant ‘Angryman’ Clarke, for the right to be named as the editor in charge of the Comment & Opinion section next year. Clarke succeeded, but Whiteway later beat the current Arts & Entertainment Co-Editor, Jonny Rowe-Davison, to become sole editor of Arts & Entertainment for the newspaper.  We will elect four sub editors for Music, Film & TV, Internet & Gaming, and Culture in October.  No one stood for the position of A&E Editor for the Mag – this too will be opened in the autumn.

The Head of News was won by a landslide, with current Sub Editor of News, Faye Joice, beating contributor Joe Wilkes. Yours truly didn’t leave empty handed however, later beating current Sports Editor, Liam Ryder, by the slenderest of margins, claiming the demanding role of leading the Purple Wednesdays (Sports) section next year. The role was won by a single vote, prompting the Vice President for Communications, Jacob Leverett, to perform a re-count before he was willing to announce the result.

Melissa Flack was elected as Deputy Editor to the Newspaper, with Hana McFaul succeeding her as Life & Style section editor, taking a step up from her current Sub Editor role. Jabeen Waheed won Life & Style Editor for the Magazine, but the Deputy position for the publication is still unclaimed.

The future looks bright for the newspaper, with a dynamic, vibrant and hard-working new team of editors and designers gearing up for a big year. All involved with the paper would like to thank those who are stepping down for their hard work and leadership during their time in charge, with special thanks going to Laura Patricia and Steph Hall, the current Publication Editors. They have lead their teams with determination, drive and ability for two of their three years at the University, being heavily involved for all three.
