Top money adviser helps students
Last month several students attended a networking event in London where money saving expert Martin Lewis was on hand to offer advice. The students, who were volunteers with Pugwash magazine and Pure FM, were Emily Handford, Holly Young, Emma Corsham, Katherine Astles, Jabeen Waheed and Steph Hall. The event was organised by the London Press Club for young media professionals and was a great success for those who attended. As part of their training and development the students were encouraged to network and to make as many contacts as they could.
When asked about the benefits of post-graduate study, Mr Lewis said, “I’m not interested in seeing that you have been in education all the time. I want to see that you have worked in the environment you are interested in. See if you can get a job in the industry you are aiming for and if you enjoy it then great. If it doesn’t work out you can always work for a couple of years and then extend your studies” He continued, “The experience you have within media at university is very different to the real world. You won’t be able to choose what you write so don’t be naive when it comes to looking to work in the real world of media.”
This advice was taken on board and has changed the plans for several of the students. Holly Young said “It was a very useful event. After Martin said he preferred to see people who have worked in an office environment, I’m now going to take up voluntary work as it’s office based.” Steph Hall added “I was in two minds about studying for an MA as it would cost at least £8000 for course fees and living costs. I didn’t really want to get a bank loan for that much as it’s a bit daunting, but after Martin’s comments I’m going to seek employment within the industry and take up post-graduate study in a couple of years when I can pay for it myself.”
