The University of Portsmouth has bought a £7 million building, at the same time as proposing to cut 16 jobs and scrap workshops in the arts department.
The building, which used to belong to the Land Registry and is called St Andrews Court, is situated next to Café Parisien.
A University spokesperson said: “It has been bought as office space for university support staff from various departments including marketing, information systems and estates and it will also be home to the Graduate School.”
The University purchased the 7,000 square metre building on the 16th September 2011.
The budget for the design and development of the building is approximately £2 million with work on the building site set to start in January 2012.
The closure of the Land Registry building was formally announced in March.
In its final 12 months, the building, which once housed a team of 200 workers, was whittled down to just 70. Soon it will be office space for University staff.
