Hockey girls make light work of Chichester

University of Portsmouth ladies 1st XI have had mixed fortunes in the last fortnight. The team crashed out of the cup at the quarter-final stage, losing the feisty game 5-1 to an impressive UWIC team.

The first loss of the season for the Portsmouth girls obviously hit them hard and would pose the question as to whether the girls could show the resilience to bounce back for future matches.

That question was answered in spectacular fashion with a well-deserved 5-1 victory over third place, and local rivals, University of Chichester.

Despite the bitter February frost, the match went ahead with both teams determined to win. Portsmouth started the stronger, however, and were soon 2-0 up thanks to goals from Laura Kenyon and Tori Clark.

Chichester managed to get back into the game after that, when an excellent ball from the midfield cut straight through the Portsmouth defence, allowing Chichester to pinch a goal and get themselves back into the game.

However, Portsmouth were able to regain control of the match and goals from Katie Pugh, Steph Lurshay and a second from Tori Clark put the game beyond a lack lustre Chichester University.

It was an excellent performance from all the players, especially Emma Elgar and Becky Mullins who made fantastic debuts for the team.

The win has put Portsmouth in a great position as they near the end of the season. The girls will continue their push for promotion with an away fixture at King’s College London on 15th February.
