Amidst the University exam period, Football 6ths team captain Kai Jefferies was short on players. But due to a lack of other sporting fixtures he was fortunately able to call upon club captain of Football Chris Morris, Vice President Matt Parry and full-back Bruce Archer.
The 6ths started well with chances coming from wingers Sam North and Jason Murphy cutting inside the King’s full backs. Striker Matt Butler, an imposing figure, was tormenting the central defenders. The midfield of skipper Jefferies, Parry and Morris took hold of the game, however, the Medics keeper kept Portsmouth at bay.
At the other end of the field, the Portsmouth back four were hardly troubled. However, an unfortunate mistake from Billy Thompson led the Medics into the lead after about half an hour. With the ball played across the box Thompson got his foot to the ball but directed it goalwards and past the helpless Matt Green.
Portsmouth regrouped at half time and started the second half positively, pressing high up the pitch. The threat was clear from the number of corners and chances created, and eventually Portsmouth hit back. Morris’ whipped corner caused a scramble in the box, with the ball eventually dropping to Jefferies who poked home the equaliser for his team.
It seemed Portsmouth would go on to grab a winner; chances were fashioned with dangerous corners from Morris and Archer, but the Medics dug in and stifled their creativity. The impressive away keeper dealt well with a 30-yard effort from Andy Oldham and also for tipping over a late free kick from left-back Archer.
It finished 1-1, but Portsmouth can be pleased with their performance in their first match back after Christmas. Bottom of the table London School of Economics 3rds are up next on February 8th.
