What’s hot and what’s not

What’s Hot

Alkaline Trio – Portsmouth Pyramids Centre – 1st May

Finally, the November 2011 rescheduled show is coming to Portsmouth. Injury caused the band to cancel the show last year, and with all the extra months to prepare, it would be disappointing if they weren’t brilliant.

Mortal Kombat – Released 4th May for PS Vita

One year on from its highly successful reboot, Mortal Kombat is coming to the Vita. Banned in Australia and deemed ‘harmful to young persons’ in Germany it may be, but that won’t stop it being the new handheld’s best selling beat-em-up.

Out of Focus – Saatchi Gallery

Their first photography exhibition in ten years, the Saatchi Gallery in London presents Out of Focus, focusing on what photography means today with work from 38 photographers, this should be pretty special and definitely worth a look.

What’s Not

Lostprophets – Southampton Guildhall – 2nd May

Back when they played in Portsmouth Guildhall a few years ago, they were nothing short of poor. Now, with another bad album added to their discography, I predict another awful gig.

Minecraft – Released 9th May for Xbox 360

Don’t get me wrong; there’s nothing wrong with Minecraft. But there was nothing wrong with Worms either and that didn’t prevent it from being exploited for the benefit of mainstream audiences when Worms 3D was released. Something tells me Minecraft is heading the same way.

JK Rowling – The Casual Vacancy

Now that the Harry Potter series has come to an end, JK takes pleasure in writing about Barry Fairweather’s death and the vacant position he leaves on the Pagford parish council… Not being funny JK but if you can’t write about wizards, don’t write anything at all.
