Final year student has died after falling from Mercantile House

A final year student has died after falling from the ninth floor of Mercantile House, Hampshire Terrace, at around 4pm yesterday.

The University of Portsmouth have confirmed the identity of the man as 20 year old Forensic Psychology student, Matthew Cole, from Bognor Regis.

Matthew’s tutor described him as ‘personable and friendly’, and said that he had been progressing well with his studies.

The university have offered their condolences to Matthew’s friends and family, and have assured their full support.

Full details of yesterday’s incident are not yet known.

A counselling room has been set up in King Henry Building, Room 2.02, and is open to all staff and students on a drop-in basis from 08.30am – 17.15pm today.

Further support will be available from the Chaplaincy in Nuffield Centre, the Students’ Union Advice Centre in Gun House, and the Student Counselling and Wellbeing Centre, also in Nuffield Centre.

    If ‘earlier reports’ of the man having jumped have not been confirmed, don’t report them.

    Why not? It’s a newspaper. Every newspaper does that.

    So sad to hear. The security in mercantile building is terrible, from personal experience It’s possible to get to the roof without anybody even stopping you. Which to me is madness now the building literally has nothing inside of it. Things like this shouldn’t happen and could have been prevented.
