Local News Shorts – Fines, Films, Astronauts and Southern Rail

Your round-up of University and local news that you may have missed:

  • Portsmouth FC are one of twelve clubs to have been fined £15,000 for failing to field ‘full strength’ teams in the EFL trophy. The team had to field at least five players who had played the previous match but failed to do so on three occasions.
  • A short independent film shot at the University of Portsmouth has been awarded a best sci-fi award in California. Emotional Motor Unit, which was filmed in the Anglesea Building and Portland courtyard won the award at the Golden Gate International Film Festival in San Francisco.
  • Astronaut Tim Peake was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Portsmouth at Guildhall. Peake spoke about his six month mission on the International Space Station after receiving an honorary doctor of science from Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith.
  • The RMT union have criticised Southern Rail over bullying staff into signing a pledge asking staff not to strike in exchange for backdated holiday pay. This follows the news of more proposed Southern Rail service strikes over the Christmas period and the statistics that 640 train journeys are cancelled daily in Britain.
