Unless you have had your head buried in the sand, or more likely, library books and university assignments, you will have noticed the sudden appearance of a pop up ice skating rink slap bang in the middle of Portsmouth’s Guildhall Square.
Rumours began circulating as early as August of a possible ice skating rink coming to town. Although, it didn’t take too long for the news of the city’s first ice skate rink to emerge in September when it was officially announced that the council granted THIS Events Co Ltd planning permission to transform Guildhall Square into its very own Skating Winter Wonderland.
“Monday’s are officially student nights at the rink, where students get 2 for 1 entry.”
Taken from the Portsmouth News, councillor Linda Symes said, “It will make the square look beautiful through the end of the year and it really is a win-win situation for the council and residents. Hopefully, it will bring more people into the city centre and Commercial Road, giving it a bit of a lift.”
The ice skating rink will stay for two months throughout the festive season until early January 2018. This is not the one and only time that the rink will be open to the public to enjoy. THIS Events Co Ltd are contracted to a six year deal which will let the city centre hub host a Winter Wonderland every winter up to 2024.
The company who are bringing ice skating joy to the city centre have also had great success with other ice rinks around the country, including Bath and just down the road, Bournemouth. The ice rink is able to accommodate 215 people at a time and each session lasting one hour with prices for students costing £8.50 including skate hire. It is open daily (excluding Christmas Day) from 10.30am to 10pm. Monday’s are officially student nights at the rink, where those who have valid student I.D can grab a partner and get in for 2 for the price of 1.
Pre-booking online is available and advisable, especially once the Christmas holidays begin and the weekends inevitably prove exceptionally popular with locals and students alike. Visitors can even book their very own Ice Marshall to help keep them on their feet rather than on the floor, as well as master the art of skating.
For those who may feel a bit more like Bambi on Ice rather than a Dancing on Ice Champion, Ice Skate also has Moguls Alpine Bar as well as the Feed Hot Dog Co adjoining the ice rink where visitors can simply kick back, relax and take in the festive spirit whilst watching the ice skaters instead.
Moguls Alpine is able to offer more than just a traditional mulled wine or steamy mug of hot chocolate. Visitors are able to book out an array of VIP booths with cosy seating both inside and outside, and take advantage of the fully licensed bar with waitress service, prosecco, champagne, spirits – not just festive – and group photos. The one hour skate session is just an extra bonus. With three packages available based on 10 people, they range from £200 per group to £500 per group.
Since its opening weekend on Saturday 18th November, the ice rink has proven a real hit already with families and students travelling from all along the south coast too visit. So what are you waiting for? Get your skate on!
