New Year, New Food Trends

Could this be the year the world goes vegan?

Food can quickly become a bore when you start eating the same thing over and over. But it’s 2018: a new year and time for new food. There are always ways to spice up your shopping list— or completely change it. And that could start with the top food trends predicted for 2018.

“It’s expected that 2018 will be the year for plant-based meats”

If you’re active on social media, mostly Instagram, then you’ve probably seen a lot of plant-based foods circulating around. People seem to been going to new lengths to incorporate plants into their diet, some as a substitute for meat, others as a way to be healthier. This isn’t that surprising when you realise that veganism and vegetarianism is now more common than ever. Most restaurants have taken to catering properly for vegetarian and vegan customers.

And with the plant-based diet, it’s expected that 2018 will be the year for plant-based meats. Although there are meat substitutes out there, it’s expected that food manufacturers all over the world are going to be producing plant-based meats that taste even more like meat. While this is excellent news for vegetarians and vegans as the food market evolves, it’s also good news for people who are just looking for more environmentally friendly ways to consume food. There is even a ‘bleeding burger’ that will soon be internationally available, which will make your plant-based burgers, look and feel more like a real burger. With all the options for protein, this is going to be a great year for those looking to form a more meat-free diet.

“2018 will bring a focus on vegetables, one being the avocado”

But a plant-based diet isn’t the only thing 2018 might bring to your shopping list. If you’re a fan of tea, then you’ll be happy to hear that sales of green tea, as well as herbal teas, are increasing. So why not add some new herbal teas to your shopping list? With this increase in sales, there are sure to be more flavours released.

Not only are there going to be more plants and tea in 2018, but there is also going to be more focus on vegetables too, one being the avocado. It was rated number 2 on the Pollock Communications survey, Top 10 Superfoods for 2018, ranking alongside seeds and nuts, kale, coconut products and salmon. Avocado would be a great addition to your shopping list; not only is it healthy, creamy and delicious, it’s also great on toast. Or maybe it would be good in a sauce. Either way, it’s a good way to mix up your shopping list this year.

Those are just a few of the trends coming in 2018. And if you’re looking for a way to change your diet, or simply spice up your shopping list this year, give some of them a try. You might just surprise yourself.
