Fancy a Drink?

It's time for the Freshers to learn about the best places to have a 'bev' in Portsmouth

Another academic year has suddenly begun which means another year of copious amounts of studying and definitely no alcohol *cough*. But just in case your friends or family want to visit and learn about the best places to grab a drink in and around the city, here are a few of the nicest (and some of the cheapest) pubs and bars for every possible occasion.

Gin & Olive
This bar is perfectly situated on Albert Road, within easy walking distance of Palmerston Road and Gunwharf Quays. Although the drinks are a little on the pricier side, it is a great place for a sophisticated drink or two to get the night going. And with the student used to a £1 pint at The Lyberry (RIP, forever in our hearts), it could be the perfect place for a first date as its prices won’t leave you tempted to get so sloshed that you can’t see your dates’ face.

Porters
Also on Albert Road, this pub is part of the more ‘casual’ scene that Southsea has to offer. With its cabin feel interior, it certainly holds a homely feel which can be a great setting for a drink with your close friends, family or other half. Although be warned, this cosy pub is popular among Portsmouth residents and so can get very busy on weekends especially. Plan in advance and use this as a place to start your night off so that you avoid the louder, more rowdy crowds.

Slug & Lettuce
This bar/restaurant chain can be found in two places in Portsmouth but the most recently refurbished and arguably the best in terms of area is situated in Gunwharf Quays. With a lengthy list of cocktails and the offering of 2-4-1 from 4pm until close, it is the place to grab a few classier drinks at a bargain price. With the clubs and late-opening bars that make up Gunwharf, it does get busy so it is a good idea to get there earlier to grab a table or plan in advance and make a reservation.

HKC Vodka Bar
This is the place that ‘does what it says on the tin’. With its vast selection of flavoured vodkas, all unique and claimed to be ‘unavailable anywhere else’, it’s great for those with more of a sweet tooth. From Maltesar flavoured shots to raspberry bon-bon vodka (that is a treat when just mixed simply with lemonade), it really is unlike anywhere else in Portsmouth. You can find this little gem on Palmerston Road, suitably near a Wetherspoons and (another) Slug & Lettuce. What more could you ask for?

Obviously, these are just a very small selection of what Portsmouth has to offer but they each have their own personalities and unique selling points. But remember, it’s more about the company you keep and where you keep it, not how many shots you can guzzle in under a minute.

Please drink responsibly.
