Gaming and tech writer Lewis Potter lists his best Black Friday bargains

Black Friday has come around again, and for many this is the perfect time to grab some amazing Christmas gifts for friends and family at a fraction of the usual price. Technology is usually at the forefront of these deals, with many big retailers such as Amazon, Currys PC World and John Lewis at the centre of the action. Here at The Galleon, we’ve rounded up some of the best deals this Black Friday for you to treat your loved ones (or yourselves) to.

For those of you looking to take advantage of next-gen consoles this Samsung 49” 4K HDR TV is only £399 at Very. They also have the same TV but 55” for £499 and other 4K TVs from the likes of Toshiba, LG and Hisense for as low as £279. On the lower end, this LOGIK 32” Smart TV is only £149, perfect for watching Netflix in your room or new uni house.

Need a new laptop for taking notes in lectures and browsing Facebook? This Geo Book 1 is only £99 at Currys. The PC World own brand notebook isn’t exactly going to break speed records, but it isn’t exactly going to break the bank either!

For more demanding tasks, this 15.6” Acer Aspire 3 comes with a 7th Gen Intel i5, 1TB hard drive for photos and movies, and 4GB RAM for juggling a few different applications at once, all for only £369 at

Playstation fanboys can pick up a brand new PS4 Pro 1TB with FIFA 19 or Spiderman for only £329.99 at Amazon. Or for a cheaper option, a PS4 500GB with FIFA 19 for £219.

Xbox fans can bag themselves an Xbox One X 1TB with Battlefield V, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Fallout 76 for £399. Or an Xbox One S 1TB with Battlefield V, Fallout 76 and Spyro Reignited for only £199.99, what a steal!

And for PC gamers, well, you just missed the Steam Autumn Sale so you’ll have to wait for Christmas.

Carphone Warehouse have loads of deals on, from sim only plans to unlocked handsets but with pay monthly phones, such as the iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy S9, iPhone 8 Plus, and Pixel 3, all from only £36 per month on a network of your choice, there’s something for everybody!

At John Lewis, the 9.7” iPad will set you back only £299, or a massive 10.5” iPad Pro for just £569, albeit just the 2017 model, it’s still a good deal. For those who prefer the Android look and feel the Huawei MediaPad M5 is only £229.99 at Amazon.

Oh, and don’t forget about Amazon’s own brand Fire tablets which are on sale as low as £29.99 for the Fire 7, a perfect gift for parents or maybe a younger sibling. You can even get this delivered in the next 2 hours with Prime Now (Portsmouth only).

Blast Christmas music into your ears on cold 9am walks with a new pair of headphones. The Wireless noise-cancelling over-ear Sony WH-CH700N (which I bought earlier in the year and can recommend highly) are only £79.99, or a pair of wireless Beats Solo 3 Neighbourhood for a little more at £179.97, both in a variety of great colours to suit your taste.

My favourite brand of Bluetooth speakers by far is Ultimate Ears. They have a premium feel, excellent sound quality and all of them are completely water and dust resistant, perfect for singing in the shower! The biggest speaker, the MEGABOOM is only £99.99 right now, a bargain. And the smallest, the WONDERBOOM is just £49.99 Pair a few up for the best house party, I guarantee it!

Smart Home
It’s finally time to upgrade to a smart home. Turn on appliances, lights and music with your voice, or over the internet, and now is the perfect time to upgrade! Alexa devices, such as the new 3rd generation of Echo Dot are only £24.99! That’s half price. If you want a good quality speaker built in as well, then the Echo is only £54.99. Get an Echo Plus to enable control of lights and appliances for £109.99 with a free smart bulb included. It’s worth it!
