Wilder vs Fury recap: Fury banishes demons in remarkable comeback bout

Tyson Fury's draw with heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder silences the troubled British boxer's critics

Over the past few years, heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has risen to the top, beaten one of
the best in Wladimir Klitschko, but sadly fell on hard times and took a two-year break. In
that two years, Fury battled his demons, facing alcohol and drug problems, as well as
suffering from mental health issues. However, this year he has inspirationally come back to the ring, firing on all cylinders.

Despite the official result being a controversial draw, Fury was still the big winner on the night in more ways than one. After beating his personal alcohol, drug and mental issues, Fury deserves huge praise and credit for returning to the ring and doing so in such a spectacular manner, taking
on none-other than current heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder.

While the first few rounds were evenly contested, with both Wilder and Fury doing well, it
was thought that the majority of the rounds went mostly in the favour of Fury. However,
after a strong finish by Wilder and a miraculous recovery from Fury in the 12th and final
round, the judges decided on a draw.

If a rematch were to take place, Fury would arguably be the strong favourite. It is likely it would
be held in England, and Fury will have more time to prepare and strengthen. The bout’s outcome sparked mass controversy within the boxing community amongst fans and ex-
professionals alike, with many claiming Fury was robbed of a deserved comeback victory.

Boxing manager and promoter Frank Warren is pushing for the organisation of a rematch
and has lodged a complaint and an investigation into the score cards. While Fury may not have be crowned champion, he won the hearts of many and further cemented his self-professed image as a ‘man of the people’ and the ‘people’s champion’.

His post-match interview speaks volumes of the meaning of the fight and encapsulated what most loved; dedicating the fight to those struggling with mental health issues and offering a role model to those in need of one.
