Interview: Union President Candidate, Mariam Daniel

Where are you originally from?
Luton. My slogan for voting is ‘Born In Luton, Made in Pompey’.

What originally drew you to the University of Portsmouth?
The seaside and the sense of calm it brings.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing that you would buy?
Keeping my family comfortable and happy, paying somebody’s student loan for them.

What was the primary reason for you running in the student elections?
I want to spread help to people that need it. My mother was a huge inspiration for my willingness to help those less fortunate than herself. For example, when we walked past homeless people on the street, my mother encouraged me to start conversations with them and find out more about why they were living on the street.

I also love to get involved with other students and student life. I really enjoy playing guitar, singing, and rapping and I’ve performed at numerous gigs on the Portsmouth musical scene. I’m scheduled to perform at the Portsmouth’s Got Talent event at Pryzm on the 27th of February. I’m also a key member of the university dodgeball society of which I have a huge passion for. I love how it puts me in touch with the students that I hope to make a difference for.

Sum up your manifesto in roughly 10-15 seconds
Advocating financial transparency – where does every penny of our university tuition fees go to. I propose greater transparency in what we as students are entitled to (e.g. emotional support networks, financial help and additional loans etc.). Promoting a safer space to discuss tabooed subjects such as mental health issues and a scheme for an improved relationship and links with transport companies e.g. taxis, bus routes, Ubers etc. in the hope of ensuring safer and easier travelling for students.

What is the greatest problem that Portsmouth students face at the minute, in your
opinion?
A lack of awareness for the options open to them in terms of career paths and emotional support.

Why do you believe you are the best person for the role?
I’m a sensitive, caring and energetic person with a goal to help as many people as I can.
